Did You Know

Tan Sri Khoo Teck Puat started as a Clerk at 16

The late Tan Sri Khoo Teck Puat began his banking career as an apprentice clerk in OCBC Bank at the age of 16.

He left OCBC Bank as a General Manager in 1959 at the age of 42.  In 1960, he founded Malayan Bank (Maybank).  In 1986, he became the largest shareholder (15% equity) of Standard Chartered Bank to thwart Lloyds Bank hostile takeover.

Among his notable holdings include Goodwood Park Hotel in Singapore.  In 2004, Forbes listed his net-worth to be S$4.3 Billion.  He passed on in 2004 at the age of 87.
