Hong Kong Exchange Reports $1.52 Billion Profit for 2023 with Market Value at $39 Billion, Bonnie Chan Yiting to Succeed Nicholas Aguzin as HKEX Chief Executive on 1st March 2024

29th February 2024 | Hong Kong

Hong Kong Exchange (HKEX) has reported $1.52 billion profit for 2023 with current market value of $39 billion (29/2/24).  Nicolas Aguzin, HKEX CEO:   “HKEX delivered a strong set of 2023 full-year results, fuelled by notable growth in its derivatives, fixed-income and currencies business. Despite the persistent challenging global backdrop and softer Cash Market, we are pleased to be reporting our second-best revenue and other income, and profits, on record, with profit attributable to shareholders for 2023 up 18 per cent.  Excellent strategic progress complemented the Group’s financial performance, with delivery of new milestones in the Connect programme, including the launch of Swap Connect and HKEX Synapse; the opening of new Group offices in New York and London, better supporting our customers on-the-ground across time-zones; and the rollout of new enhancements to HKEX’s listing franchise, including Chapter 18C and the launch of FINI. A particular highlight this year, has been the success of the Group’s continued product diversification focus and market microstructure enhancements, which have been instrumental in driving new daily trading records in 2023 for HKEX’s equity derivatives, RMB Currency Futures, OTC Clear and ETP markets.  Looking ahead, whilst the macroeconomic and geopolitical environment remains turbulent, we are cautiously optimistic that, as sentiment improves, we are well placed to capitalise on the global pivot to Asia, on Hong Kong’s unique role as an East-West superconnector, on our unrivalled China advantage and on the megatrends, such as sustainability, that are shaping capital markets around the world.”  Earlier in February 2024, Hong Kong Exchange announced the acceleration of HKEX CEO transition with Bonnie Chan Yiting to succeed Nicholas Aguzin as HKEX Chief Executive on 1st March 2024 instead of May 2024, with Wilfred Yiu as Deputy Chief Executive & Vanessa Lau as Co-COO also effective 1st March 2024.   More info below:

Laura M Cha, Chairman, HKEX: “On behalf of the HKEX Board, I would like to thank Nicolas for leading HKEX during a very challenging period. He has played a major role in driving the promotion of Hong Kong’s financial markets internationally during this time, re-starting dialogue and connectivity in a post-Covid world and ensuring that HKEX was very much seen as open-for-business. I believe we have succeeded in this, building strong purpose-led foundations that will continue helping the financial sector to be a critical enabler of the real economy for years to come. The Group’s unique strength is both its China and global connectivity and during my tenure we have been steadfast in ensuring that Hong Kong’s markets have remained relevant, connected and competitive, successfully supporting our customers and stakeholders around the world. I am particularly proud of the wide range of strategic initiatives and projects that the team has delivered in the last few years, despite the challenging and turbulent backdrop. Over the next few months, I will work closely with my team to ensure a smooth and seamless transition of leadership at the Group.”

Bonnie Y Chan, HKEX Co-Chief Operating Officer: “It is an honour to have been asked to become HKEX’s new Chief Executive Officer, an organisation that I have worked for twice, and that I have had interactions with throughout my career. Nicolas has expertly led HKEX during a particularly turbulent few years in global markets, and I inherit a strong business that is well placed, both operationally and strategically. I would like to thank him for his leadership and personally wish him all the very best for the future. As the world pivots east, as exciting developments in new technologies and ways of working evolve and as we work together to address major challenges such as climate change and a fragile global economic backdrop, the opportunities for HKEX remain immense. I look forward to working with the Board, the Management Committee and the full HKEX team to harness those opportunities.”
