The State Bank of India (SBI) was founded in 1806 as Bank of Calcutta, and was renamed as Bank of Bengal in 1809. In 1921, the 3 banks (Bank of Bengal, Bank of Bombay & Bank of Madras) merged to form Imperial Bank of India, and became State Bank of India in 1955 after India Central Bank (Reserve Bank of India) acquired controlling interest.
