Northern Trust Asset Management ($1.3 trillion AUM) has appointed Michael Hunstad & Christian Roth as Co-Chief Investment Officers (1/6/25), succeeding Angelo Manioudakis who is retiring (31/5/25) after more than 30 years in the asset management industry. Michael Hunstad is currently Northern Trust Asset Management Deputy CIO & CIO of Global Equities with $758 billion AUM, and Christian Roth is CIO Global Fixed Income with $490.1 billion AUM. Announcement (8/5/25): “Northern Trust Asset Management (NTAM), a leading global investment management firm with $1.3 trillion in assets under management as of March 31, 2025, has appointed Michael Hunstad, PhD and Christian (Chris) Roth, CFA as Global Co-Chief Investment Officers, effective June 1, 2025. Hunstad and Roth will oversee NTAM’s investment performance, process and philosophy. They will co-chair the Investment Policy Committee and lead the equity, fixed income, multi-asset and alternatives chief investment officers globally. They will be members of the Asset Management Executive Group and report to NTAM President Daniel Gamba. Hunstad and Roth will succeed Angelo Manioudakis, who will retire from NTAM effective May 31, 2025. Manioudakis joined NTAM in September 2021 after more than 30 years in the asset management industry.”

Michael Hunstad, Ph.D. – Hunstad has spent more than 12 years with NTAM. Most recently, he was deputy chief investment officer and chief investment officer of global equities, overseeing all equity portfolio management, research and trading activities including quantitative, index and tax-advantaged strategies. NTAM has $758B in equity assets under management as of March 31, 2025. Previously, Hunstad was head of quantitative strategies at NTAM, leading factor-based research, portfolio management and product development programs. Hunstad holds a Ph.D. in mathematics, an MBA in finance, a master’s degree in econometrics and a bachelor’s degree in economics.
Christian Roth, CFA – Roth joined NTAM in April 2024 as chief investment officer of global fixed income. He oversees the investment strategy, process and approach for NTAM’s fixed income and liquidity business globally. As of March 31, 2025, NTAM has $490.1B in fixed income and liquidity assets under management. Previously, Roth spent three decades at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, where he held several leadership roles in the firm’s fixed income business, including as head of broad markets fixed income and head of multi-sector fixed income. He is a CFA® charterholder.
