United States $1.1 billion egg producer Hillandale Farms Orland Bethel billionaire family (Orland Bethel Family Foundation) has announced to donate $53.5 million to United States University of Pittsburgh to expand Orland Bethel Family Musculoskeletal Research Center (BMRC) for musculoskeletal care & research, with total of $100 million donations by Orland Bethel Family Foundation. Hillandale Farms was acquired by Brazil Global Eggs for $1.1 billion in 2025. Hillandale Farms was founded in 1958 by Orland Bethel. Announcement (21/1/26): “The Orland Bethel Family Foundation, a powerful supporter of the health sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, has committed an additional $53.5 million to expand the Orland Bethel Family Musculoskeletal Research Center (BMRC). The gift, which brings giving from the Bethel family to nearly $100 million in the last five years, will grow the Center’s research, innovation, and training efforts. The strategic gift will create three endowed professorships, launch an award program for mid-career researchers and thought leaders, improve recruitment and retention of key BMRC leaders, develop a commercialization-focused curriculum, connect researchers with venture capital, and better couple the BMRC with industry leaders to ensure it is producing the researchers and leaders most in demand inside and outside of academia. Along with this recent gift, Orland Bethel and his family foundation committed $25 million in 2023 to create the BMRC, $18.5 million last year to launch the Orland Bethel Musculoskeletal Research Center Biobank, and a previous $2 million gift to establish the Orland Bethel Professorship in Spine Surgery. Orland Bethel suffered from incapacitating spinal pain before turning to clinicians at UPMC, who are also scientists at the University of Pittsburgh, for help. Bethel, founder of Hillandale Farms, which is among the nation’s largest egg producers, received relief and restored function following surgery performed by Dr. Lee.” Background – Born in southeast Ohio and raised on a dairy farm, Orland Bethel borrowed $4,000 from his parents and in-laws to start an egg production and distribution company, Hillandale Farms, in 1958. After decades of hard work, he built the company into an industry leader. In 2014, Bethel was dealing with spinal stenosis, a condition that causes the narrowing and squeezing of the nerves and spinal cord, causing pain and other symptoms. He consulted six orthopaedic surgeons but wanted to avoid the invasive procedure they recommended. Joon Y. Lee, professor of orthopaedic surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, associate program director and clinical director of the Ferguson Laboratory, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, was able to address Bethel’s problem with a minimally invasive approach, following it a few years later with another spinal operation for a subsequent problem. In appreciation, Bethel and his foundation created the Orland Bethel Professorship in Spine Surgery, which Lee now holds.
