Australia leading coal producer Yancoal Australia ($6.4 billion market value) has announced to buy 80% stake in Australia Kestrel Coal Mine for $2.4 billion ($1.85 billion upfront, $550 million contingents) at $3 billion valuation in all-cash deal. Kestrel Coal Mine was formed in 2018 by EMR Capital & Adaro Energy (80%) and Mitsui Coal Australia (20%). Yancoal Australia is majority owned by China energy giant Yankuang Energy Group ($25 billion market value). Kestrel Coal Mine – Kestrel mine, a joint venture formed in 2018 between EMR Capital and Adaro Capital Limited (80%) and Mitsui Coal (20%), is located in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. Kestrel Coal Mine is one of the largest underground metallurgical-coal operations in production in Australia. Coal from the mine is sold mostly into Asian steelmaking markets. Yancoal Australia – Yancoal owns and operates a diversified portfolio of world class assets consisting of both large-scale open-cut and underground mines comprising five coal mine complexes in Australia. As a leading low-cost coal producer in the global seaborne market, Yancoal’s coal mining operations produce a mix of premium thermal, semi-soft coking, and pulverised coal injection (“PCI”) coals, together with mid-to-high ash thermal Coals. Yancoal’s customers are located throughout the Asia-Pacific region with China, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea accounting for approximately 81% of their revenue from coal sales in the year ended 31 December 2025.
