The world’s largest home improvement retailer ($369 billion market value) Home Depot (via subsidiary SRS Distribution) has announced to buy North America specialty building products distributor GMS for $4.3 billion ($5.5 billion including debt), representing +36% premium to closing price (18/6/25). GMS was founded in 1971. Home Depot was founded in 1978 by Bernard Marcus, Arthur Blank, Ron Brill, Pat Farrah & Ken Langone. GMS Inc – Founded in 1971, GMS operates a network of more than 320 distribution centers with extensive product offerings of wallboard, ceilings, steel framing and complementary construction products. In addition, GMS operates nearly 100 tool sales, rental and service centers, providing a comprehensive selection of building products and solutions for its residential and commercial contractor customer base across the United States and Canada. The Company’s operating model combines the benefits of a national platform and strategy with a local go-to-market focus, enabling GMS to generate significant economies of scale while maintaining high levels of customer service.
