Location – Caudwell’s mansion is located on Chesterfield Street in Mayfair, a Georgian Street with much of its original architecture intact. The affluent street, lined with Grade II-listed properties, has been home to many famous and notable residents, including former prime minister, Anthony Eden, and social reformer and author, Caroline Norton. Mayfair is where Caudwell concluded a five-year search for a property in London he could use to entertain and host events for wealthy contacts to raise funds for his charity, Caudwell Children. He initially eschewed Mayfair for being ‘too commercialised’ and extended his search across Kensington, Knightsbridge, and Belgravia, before realising Mayfair was the epicentre in which he often found himself in the pursuit of good food, clubs, and antique shops. The mansion – often now known as ‘Mayfair House’ – comprises two Grade II-listed buildings linked by basement, and was purchased by Caudwell in 2012 for £87 million. Profile -Self-made billionaire John Caudwell grew up in Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England, and discovered his commercial and creative streak at a young age. It was in the mid-1980s, when operating a successful car dealership in his hometown, that he turned a communications problem into a business opportunity. John founded Caudwell Group, the pioneering telecommunications company which included Phones 4U, the UK’s largest independent mobile phone retailer with over 600 stores across the country. When he sold Caudwell Group in 2006, the business was selling 26 phones a minute. John Caudwell was born on 7 October 1952 in Birmingham, England. Originally from the Midlands, his family moved and settled in Stoke-on-Trent in north Staffordshire, an area which has always battled with economic and social challenges. John was aware of his entrepreneurial and creative streak even as a child, engaging in schemes as varied as growing worms in a box under his mother’s bed which he would then sell to fishermen, collecting gift coupons from cigarette packets and selling the goods he bought with them, and selling motorcycle clothing – a business so successful that the manufacturer eventually blocked his supply after complaints from competitors. John abandoned his A-levels in favour of something more practical, and began an engineering apprenticeship at the Michelin Tyre factory in Stoke-on-Trent.
