The World Economic Forum (WEF) 2021 scheduled to take place in Singapore in August 2021, has been cancelled due to uncertain travel outlook, speed of vaccination rollout and new variants emerging. The World Economic Forum made the official announcement stating “the uncertainties had made it impossible to realise a global meeting with business, government and civil society leaders from all over the world at the scale which was planned, despite excellent support provided by the Government of Singapore.”

The World Economic Forum (WEF) 2021, an annual event in Switzerland held in every January and attracting world leaders, CEOs, billionaires and society leaders, had announced in December 2020 to hold the event in Singapore instead. Originally scheduled to be between 13th to 16th May 2021 Singapore, the event was re-scheduled to take place between 25th to 28th May 2021, and thereafter postponed to the 17th to 20th August 2021.
Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, Professor Klaus Schwab:
“It was a difficult decision, particularly in view of the great interest of our partners to come together not just virtually but in person, and to contribute to a more resilient, more inclusive and more sustainable world. But ultimately the health and safety of everyone concerned is our highest priority.”
The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. Established in 1971 as a not-for-profit foundation and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, it is independent, impartial and not tied to any special interests.
In the early 1970s, the Cold War between United States and Russia had split the world while the Vietnam war split America. With a growing oil crisis in 1970s, a German economics professor and engineer founded the World Economic Forum.
The World Economic Forum was founded by Professor Klaus Schwab, an engineer and economist in 1971. He created the “stakeholder theory” which means that company should serve all its stakeholders including employees, suppliers, and the community it is part, and not just only its shareholders. The vision for this socially responsible “stakeholder capitalism” became the guiding principle of the World Economic Forum.
He chose Davos as the home for the annual meeting for the escape from the everyday that the mountains represent in Swiss and German culture. In 2020, the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland held its 50th annual meeting.
