The World Economic Forum 2022 Annual Meeting Announcement:

The World Economic Forum will defer its Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, in the light of continued uncertainty over the Omicron outbreak. The Annual Meeting was scheduled to take place in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland between 17-21 January, 2022. It is now planned for early summer.  Participants will instead join a headline series of State of the World sessions bringing together global leaders online to focus on shaping solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.

Current pandemic conditions make it extremely difficult to deliver a global in-person meeting. Preparations have been guided by expert advice and have benefited from the close collaboration of the Swiss government at all levels.  Despite the meeting’s stringent health protocols, the transmissibility of Omicron and its impact on travel and mobility have made deferral necessary.  The health and safety of everyone involved in physical meetings – participants, collaborators and the host community – have always been the Forum’s priority.

“The deferral of the Annual Meeting will not prevent progress through continued digital convening of leaders from business, government and civil society,” said Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum. “Public-private cooperation has moved forward throughout the pandemic and that will continue apace. We look forward to bringing global leaders together in person soon.”

Original Announcement:
  • The World Economic Forum Annual Meeting to take place 17-21 January 2022 in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, under the theme Working Together, Restoring Trust
  • The foremost business, government and civil society leaders to convene in person to address economic, environmental, political and social fault-lines exacerbated by the pandemic
  • Meeting will focus on accelerating stakeholder capitalism, harnessing the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and ensuring a more inclusive future of work
  • The role of public-private cooperation will be crucial to rebuilding trust and shaping a more sustainable future

The World Economic Forum plans to convene the world’s foremost leaders for the Annual Meeting 2022 in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, under the theme Working Together, Restoring Trust Taking place in person from 17-21 January, the Annual Meeting 2022 will be the first truly global leadership event to set the agenda for a sustainable recovery.

The pandemic has exacerbated fractures across society. It is a critical year for leaders to come together and shape necessary partnerships and policies. The meeting will bring together forward-thinking leaders to drive multistakeholder collaboration and address the world’s most pressing economic, political and societal challenges. Further details will be announced in due course.

The wellbeing of our participants, staff, service providers and hosts is a priority. Therefore, the World Economic Forum is working closely with the Swiss authorities, as well as with experts, national and international health organizations to put in place measures for the Annual Meeting 2022 that are appropriate and adapted to the context.

Progressing cooperation on tackling climate change, building a better future for work, accelerating stakeholder capitalism, and harnessing the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution will be important topics on the agenda.

Ahead of the Annual Meeting 2022, the Forum will host the fifth Sustainable Development Impact Summit to take place virtually from 20 to 23 September 2021 in the context of the United Nations General Assembly. The summit will convene under the theme Shaping an Equitable, Inclusive and Sustainable Recovery. It will welcome more than 2,000 leaders from government, business and civil society who will work together to drive action and build momentum for a more sustainable and inclusive future.

The World Economic Forum

The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. Established in 1971 as a not-for-profit foundation and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, it is independent, impartial and not tied to any special interests.

In the early 1970s, the Cold War between United States and Russia had split the world while the Vietnam war split America.  With a growing oil crisis in 1970s, a German economics professor and engineer founded the World Economic Forum.

The World Economic Forum was founded by Professor Klaus Schwab, an engineer and economist in 1971. He created the “stakeholder theory” which means that company should serve all its stakeholders including employees, suppliers, and the community it is part, and not just only its shareholders.  The vision for this socially responsible “stakeholder capitalism” became the guiding principle of the World Economic Forum.

He chose Davos as the home for the annual meeting for the escape from the everyday that the mountains represent in Swiss and German culture.  In 2020, the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland held its 50th annual meeting.
