For five years, the 2009-10 National Treasures Steph Curry Logoman Autograph card has enjoyed the view from the top of the heap, the $5.9 million private sale to an investment fund in July 2021 demonstrating the virtually unlimited elasticity of the market’s upper edge. Jordan had eight such appearances–four with LeBron James, two with Julius Erving, one with Scottie Pippen, and this Kobe card. Kobe appeared on eleven, and we’ll repeat that this is the only Jordan example. If there had been any question of whether or not this Kobe/Jordan pairing was the most desirable of all cards from the series, the tragic helicopter crash in January 2020 eliminated them, slamming the door on any possibility of a theoretical future sequel. But this card does not rest upon its laurels of inimitability, providing far more than the bare minimum. While the NBA logo sourced from a Kobe jersey is provided in its standard patriotic colorway, the golden logo beside it assures participation in the glorious 1996-97 season that saw Jordan claim the penultimate NBA Championship of his storied career. Framing these twin logos are blue felt tip signatures that remain as bold as the date of their application. The result is a dazzling showpiece with aesthetics worthy of the subject matter.
