The World Economic Forum (WEF), an annual event in Switzerland held in every January and attracting world leaders, CEOs, billionaires and society leaders, had announced in December 2020 to hold the event in Singapore between 13th to 16th May 2021, and thereafter rescheduled to 25th to 28th May 2021.  View: World Economic Forum 2021 to be Held in Singapore in May

The Special Annual Meeting 2021 (WEF) in Singapore will now take place from 25th to 28th May 2021, and will be the first global leadership event to address worldwide recovery from the pandemic.  It will bring together global leaders to focus on shaping solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.

Instead of the World Economic Forum that is usually held in January, taking place virtually (online) is The Davos Agenda.  The Davos Agenda took place between 25th to 29th January 2021. View: Davos Agenda

Although the World Economic Forum and Government of Singapore remain confident of the measures in place to ensure a safe and effective meeting, and local transmission of COVID-19 in Singapore remains at negligible levels, the change to the meeting’s timing reflects the international challenges in containing the pandemic. Current global travel restrictions have made planning difficult for an in-person meeting in the first half of the year. Furthermore, differing quarantine and air transport regulations have increased the lead time necessary to ensure that participants globally can make arrangements to join.

The Special Annual Meeting 2021 in Singapore in August will be the first global leadership summit to address the challenges of recovering from the pandemic and laying the basis for a more inclusive and sustainable world. It will bring leaders face-to-face to focus on shaping solutions to the most pressing challenges of our times.

Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum:

“A global leadership summit needs the participation of all global stakeholders. The Special Annual Meeting in Singapore in August will provide the place for leaders from business, government and civil society to come together to address the steps for global recovery.”

The World Economic Forum

The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. Established in 1971 as a not-for-profit foundation and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, it is independent, impartial and not tied to any special interests.

In the early 1970s, the Cold War between United States and Russia had split the world while the Vietnam war split America.  With a growing oil crisis in 1970s, a German economics professor and engineer founded the World Economic Forum.

The World Economic Forum was founded by Professor Klaus Schwab, an engineer and economist in 1971. He created the “stakeholder theory” which means that company should serve all its stakeholders including employees, suppliers, and the community it is part, and not just only its shareholders.  The vision for this socially responsible “stakeholder capitalism” became the guiding principle of the World Economic Forum.

He chose Davos as the home for the annual meeting for the escape from the everyday that the mountains represent in Swiss and German culture.  In 2020, the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland held its 50th annual meeting.
