Spanish Football League LaLiga Receives $3.2 Billion Private Equity Investment from CVC Capital, Real Madrid and Barcelona Criticises Deal

Spanish football league (LaLiga), which once had 2 of the world’s most valuable & richest football stars Lionel Messi and Christina Ronaldo together in the competition, has struck a deal to receive $3.2 billion (€2.7 billion) from leading private equity CVC Capital Partners. Shortly after the deal, Real Madrid and Barcelona immediately criticise the deal with Real Madrid preparing for legal actions. The $3.2 billion investment from CVC Capital Partners will be a 10% shareholding in LaLiga and 10% revenue share, valuing Spanish football league (La Liga) at $32 billion. The Spanish football league’s Executive Committee has approved the deal and it will soon be voted by all league members, including Real Madrid and Barcelona.

CVC Capital Partners Deals & Portfolio
CVC Capital Partners is founded in 1981 as the European arm of Citicorp Venture Capital and was spinoff in 1993 through a buyout by partners, is one of the largest global private equity firm today managing $162 billion of capital. In November 2020, CVC had attempted to purchase the media company of Italian soccer league Serie A for €1.7 billion for 10% shareholding. After numerous Italian football clubs including Juventus, Inter Milan, Napoli, Lazio, Atalanta and Fiorentina raised concerns about the investment, the deal lapsed in February 2021.
CVC Capital Partners has strong experience in sports investment with portfolio investments in Volleyball World (Leading organiser of volleyball events including World Championships, Olympic Qualifiers), Premiership Ruby (England’s top Ruby League) and exited investment in Formula 1 (Car Racing).
CVC Capital Partners current portfolio includes Oanda (Trading Platform) and TMF Group (Corporate Service Provider), and exited portfolio includes Samsonite (Lugguage), Virgin Active (Health & Fitness), Sun Hung Kai (Hong Kong Alternative Investments Group) and Skrill (Digital Payment).
