Essential Attributes

  • Pursuing an advanced degree. ideally Ph.D., in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, or a related quantitative field, with at least one year remaining before your expected graduation date.
  • Strong evidence of ability to conduct original research. That shall include a proven publication record in leading machine learning and AI venues (we do not count publication numbers)
  • Demonstrated practical experience and deep understanding of modern deep learning architectures, in particular transformers and its variants.
  • Solid knowledge in fundamental data science, optimization, and statistics
  • Solid programming skills (language does not matter; Python is fine)
  • No prior experience in finance is needed.

Desirable Attributes

  • Proven expertise in developing and working with foundational models, including but not limited to large language models and multi-modal frameworks.
  • A background in managing and analyzing large, unstructured, and noisy datasets.

Interview Format  

We plan to keep our internship cohort small, with a highly selective application process. Our interview process seeks to gain signal in the following topics:

  • Your Research Experience
  • Modern machine learning techniques, especially deep learning
  • Classical machine learning techniques
  • General mathematics (linear algebra, analysis, probability etc.)
  • Hands-on programming and data engineering

We seek to get a broad signal in our process. Successful candidates are those who are strong in all areas and exceed expectations in at least one.

Your interview process will follow a three-stage format:

  • The first interview round will be a discussion with the Research Director to delve into the applicant’s research history, knowledge in deep learning/machine learning, compatibility with XTY’s goals, and to gauge their innovative thought processes.
  • The next stage will be a practical take-home exercise, where applicants are provided with a dataset to construct and develop an AI model comprehensively from start to finish.
  • The final stage is a 1-hour interview with either an XTX Quantitative Researcher or XTY full-time Researcher.

19th June – Ex-Deutsche Bank trader, billionaire & founder of quant trading firm XTX Markets Alex Gerko (Age 45) with $14 billion fortune & 12 ex-GSA Capital traders have filed a UK lawsuit to challenge UK HMRC (His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs) $30 million (£22.5 million) tax on deferred trading profits.  The UK HMRC had won UK lower courts to apply individual tax rate (higher tax) instead of corporate tax rate (lower tax).  In 2025 April, Alex Gerko (Age 45) fortune increased to $13 billion, with XTX Markets reporting a record £1.28 billion ($1.6 billion) profit for 2024.  In 2024 February, Alex Gerko (Age 44) with $11 billion fortune is the largest taxpayer in UK paying $844 million (£664 million) in taxes for 2023.  In 2024, XTX Markets paid $2 billion (£1.6 billion) dividend to shareholders for 2023.  Alex Gerko started his career at Deutsche Bank as a trader (equities, foreign exchange), and joined UK hedge fund GSA Capital in 2009.  In 2015, Alex Gerko founded quant trading firm XTX Markets, and owns around 75% of MTX Markets.  Alex Gerko was born in Russia and moved to United Kingdom in 2006.  In 2022, Alex Gerko renounced his Russian citizenship and is a British citizenship.  In 2023 January, Alex Gerko was listed as the largest taxpayer in UK paying £487 million in taxes for 2022.
